Our Ducks
We started with Indian Runners and have used them for so many years, but they just don't have the lasting power for the harsh ND winters. So we are going to try Welsh Harlequins from Metzer Farms this year. They are a medium, very calm breed that has good mothering skills and flocking behavior. Plus come with interesting feather patterns. They are derived from Khaki Campbells and have excellent egg production abilities, plus will sit and hatch their eggs.
We still have some male Indian Runners that survived the -35 degree temps and may try a combo breeding of Welsh Harlequins and Runner crosses. But we plan on preserving the Welsh Harlequins too.

Our ducks will be hatched on Feb. 22, 2010 and will be ready to work this May 2010. They arrived Wed. Feb. 24 and only 3 didn't make it. So we have 29 Welsh Harlequins. Here is a picture at day 3 of their life in brooder. As of June 10, 2010: We have 17 Harlequins left (6 females and 11 males). We have everyone broken down into working groups of either 3 males or 3 males and 2 females ( 3 working groups). Plus we have 4 Indian Runner males left to work and use for cross breeding in the spring. We plan on breeding (depending on survival rate this winter) 4 WH x WH crosses and 2 WH x IR crosses. |
