Training - Lessons Offered

Introduction    Methods of Training    Classes Offered    Sessions    Fees

Introduction: I have been training dogs since 1993 and  offer private or group lessons either at my house in the summer or private lessons at your house in the winter.  I have also been a Basic Agility Instructor for 1 1/2 years at the Grand Forks Kennel Club and before offered group lessons at my house in the summer.  I actively trial and train my border collies in herding, agility and rally obedience.  I have put novice titles in all those areas and either intermediate legs or titles in agility and rally obedience.  I base the classes for private lessons on you and your dog's needs in order to meet your goals, while the group lessons have a basic structure to cover the most information geared for the class.

Methods of training:  I believe in a dog learning what we want with out giving confusing signals and/or using harsh training methods.  I teach the owner how to teach the dog.  I believe in giving the owner the "tool box" of methods in order to reach their goals.  These goals may be to have a better behaved dog, achieve competition levels, etc.  I do use treats and "lure" the dog to show what I want and once the concept is understood - I recommend phasing the "lure" out. I strongly believe a dog which knows what is expected from it is a happier dog which equals a happy owner.

Classes Offered:

Puppy Kindergarten - Class length 7 weeks  -  Dog age 12 weeks to 6 months - The goals of this class is to socialize the puppies to a variety of situations and objects, teach a basic sit, down, stand, start the recall, walking on a loose leash, introduce the puppy to puppy agility: small a-frame, puppy seesaw, tunnel, weaves, small dogwalk, and to start proper handling techniques: nail clipping, ear cleaning, brushing, and strangers handling it.

Beginner Obedience - Class length 7 weeks - Dog age 6 months and beyond - The goals for this class is to start heel on leash, sit stay - 1 minutes, down stay - 2 minutes, stand, come, front, dog lays down when not busy, watch command, leave it, and go say hi to strangers.

Basic Agility - Class length 7 weeks - Dog age 9 months to beyond - The goals of this class is to introduce the agility obstacles: jumps, weave poles, seesaw, dog walk, a-frame, tunnel, collapsed tunnel, tire jump, table, and broad jump in a safe manner.  The class is also geared towards learning basic handling skills, "out", "go", "here", and "switch" commands.

Intermediate Agility - Class length 7 weeks - Prerequisite is a Basic Agility class - The class will build on the Basic Agility class above, while adding 4 and 5 obstacle sequences and more challenging handling techniques.

Rally Novice - Class length 7 weeks - Dog age 9 months to beyond - Prerequisite a basic obedience class - This class will teach the handler the rules of AKC Rally Obedience while introducing the Rally novice signs.  It builds on the basic obedience skills and can be used to refine handling for Competitive Obedience.
